Keighery, Frank (Private, b.1894 - d.1915)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 445 Private Frank Keighery, 24th Infantry Battalion, Gallipoli, 1915. Collection consists of a handwritten diary, kept by Keighery during his training and service at Gallipoli. The diary was taken from his body after his death at Lone Pine, on 11 September 1915 and some of the pages appear to be stained with his blood. The writing is mainly in Pitman Shorthand, with a few passages in standard written English including a poem expressing homesickness for the Australian bush. Keighery was a journalist in the Lang Lang area, South Gippsland, Victoria before enlisting for service in the First World War. A number of articles written by him or by him appeared in the Lang Lang Guardian.
