Platypus XI
Description
The Platypus series of missions were carried out during the Second World War by members of the Services Reconnaissance Department (SRD) to support Operation Oboe 2, the Allied landings at Balikpapan, Borneo. Platypus XI mission was to obtain intelligence in the Semoi, Mantawir and Sepakoe areas and in particular determine information on prisoners of war in the area. The party of four under Lt C Chalmers left Balikpapan on 22 July 1945 by folboat. The mission came into contact and assisted Fl/Lt Martin from Platypus VII, missing since 30 July 1945, and made significant local contacts that led to the rescue of 63 Indian prisoners of war.
