German East Africa campaign

German East Africa, a region including present-day Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania, was the site of the largest and longest campaign waged in Africa during the First World War. The British government first ordered the conquest of German East Africa in August 1914, but by the time of the Armistice in November 1918, the British had yet to overcome the German colonial forces led by General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. British strategy in German East Africa consisted of land operations launched from neighbouring British-controlled territory, and a seaborne blockade of the East African coast.
