Not titled [French lessons on board ship]
Sketchbook containing 56 pages of drawings from his service during the First World War
- Scrapbook leaf with four sketches attached and inscriptions
Description
Depicts Sergeant Barrett conducting French lessons with six soldiers on top of the ship's deck. Another soldier's silhouette can bee seen behind the main group holding papers or a book. He is not likely to be participating in the lessons as he's out of the Sergeant's eyeline. The ship's funnel is being used as a blackboard instructing the servicemen on how to ask for bread, salt, milk and beer in French.
