Description

Account written by (415) Private Arthur James Rouget of 13 Light Horse Regiment and Australian Veterinary Hospital, covering the period May 1915 to November 1918. Details voyage (on the SS Persic) to Egypt, and duties there guarding Turkish POWs; active service on Gallipoli towards the end of the campaign (with 24 Battalion in the Lone Pine trenches). Includes an account of the evacuation and move back to Egypt in 1916. After transfer to France (June 1916) an account of his various postings on the Western Front performing lines of communication duties. Description of the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line and allied follow up operations, includes a reference to the German time-delayed bomb which destroyed the town hall at Bapaume. Latter portions of the journal chronicle the various postings and duties between late 1917 and the end of the war, including an intensive training course at Longue-les-Corps which was bitterly resented by the writer. Collection also includes two photographs of Private Rouget.
