Collection relating to the Second World war service of 422062 Flight Lieutenant Francis Owen Smith, 100 Squadron RAAF, 1943.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection comprises Flight Lieutenant (FL) Smith's flying log book for 1943 while a wireless operator flying Beauforts. FL Smith recorded information on aircraft type and number, pilot, duty flying times and remarks. He also made reference to bombing a K12 submarine, September 1943, low-level bombing and stafing and exercise formations.

History / Summary

Flight Lieutenant Francis Owen Smith was killed in New Guinea, 13 March 1945, while flying in a Beaufort, piloted by Flight Officer Fowler. Fowler's name appears as the pilot for many of the flights recorded by Smith in his logbook. Smith's last entry on 12 March 1945, the day before his death, records "Strike canoes Brungowi, Sepik River bombed and strafed".
