Description
Studio portrait of 1723 Private (Pte) Gerald Walshe Howling, 2nd Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, of Geelong, Vic. Pte Howling enlisted on 20 May 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 16 July 1915. He died of wounds received at Vignacourt, France, on 23 May 1918. Pte Howling's younger brother, 635 Pte Frank Walsh Howling, 24th Battalion, also served overseas and returned to Australia on 15 February 1918.
