America Marches with the United Nations: A Procession of Photographs of a Nation at War

'America Marches with the United Nations' was a very significant exhibition in the history of Scottish museums, as it was the first exhibition to be designed and created in the United States, to be sent to Scotland. The exhibition was created by the United States Office of War Information in collaboration with the British Ministry of Information. The aim of the exhibition was to boost morale in the United Kingdom with the United States' entry into the war. The exhibition comprised mainly black and white photographs taken by the curator of the exhibition, Lieutenant Commander Edward Steichen, who had been a pioneer of aerial intelligence in the First World War, then Director of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit. Originally, Steichen was commissioned by the MOMA in New York to create a series of photographs of America from both before and during war. This would form the basis of America Marches with the United Nations.
