Original graves of soldiers and officers in Heilly Court Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, France. In the left foreground is the grave of 5732 Private Norman Lublin, 1st Battalion, who died of wounds on 19 February 1917. In the centre foreground is the grave of Brigadier General Duncan John Glasfurd. Of Scots descent, Glasfurd served with the British army in southern Africa and India and was then seconded to the Australian Army as Director of Military Training in 1912. In August 1915 he was appointed to 1st Division Headquarters as a staff officer with the rank of major; he supervised 1st Division training at Mena camp in Egypt. On the Gallipoli Peninsula he succeeded Lieutenant Colonel C B Brudenell White as General Staff Officer 1, 1st Division. In March 1916 Glasfurd became commander of the newly formed 12th Infantry Brigade, which went to France in June that year. Glasfurd was Mentioned in Despatches for his services on the Gallipoli Peninsula and on the Western Front (twice). He died of wounds on the Somme on 12 November 1916. On the right is the grave of Private William Frederick Dwyer, 1st Battalion, a native of Newtown, NSW, who died of injuries received accidentally on 19 February 1917.
