Description

Studio portrait of 3503 Private (Pte) William Swales who was born at Longreach, Qld, the son of Isaac James Swales. He attended State Public School and worked for some time before enlisting at Longreach on 25 October 1916 and was subsequently assigned to the 49th Battalion. Swales' unit proceeded overseas to Egypt and after a period of training in that area moved to France. The 49th Battalion was involved in operations at Pozieres and the area of Mouquet Farm in 1916 and 1917. In April 1918, the Battalion took part in the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux. On 25 April Swales was wounded in action and died shortly after. He was 22 year of age at the time of his death and is buried in the Crouy British Cemetery in France.
