Description

The original grave marker, covered in flowers, of 4676 Private (Pte) Walter Vane Smith de Heriz (served as Vane de Heriz), 18th Battalion, of Ashfield, NSW, originally of Ludlow, England. Pte de Heriz, a secondhand bookseller, enlisted on 20 September 1915 as a corporal and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic on 13 April 1916. He was promoted to sergeant on 30 April 1916 and died of self inflicted wounds in Egypt on 23 May 1916 aged 37 years. He was buried as a private at the Port Said War Memorial Cemetery.
