Studio portrait of 4769 Private (Pte) William Francis Evans, 53rd Battalion. A clerk from Mascot, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Evans embarked with the 15th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Star of England on 8 March 1916. Later transferring to the 53rd Battalion he was initially reported as missing in action, and a Court of Enquiry later determined that he had been killed in action on 19 July 1917. He is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles, France. Note Pte Evans has Sergeant stripes on the right sleeve of his tunic.
