Description
A Cambodian family who are squatting in the grounds of the wat (or temple) that appears in P03258.434, in Phnom Penh. The young woman sitting in the foreground is holding a tiny newborn baby wrapped in a krama (a traditional scarf), while another member of the family is using the crutches which appear to the left. This family are among the many thousands of landless poor squatting in public buildings or living in the squalour of slum conditions on vacant land in the city or along the banks of the Tonle Sap River. Many returned after years of exile in the Thai border camps to discover their former homes were already 'owned' and occupied; others have been displaced by fighting, landmines and rural poverty.
