Studio portrait of 2395 Private (Pte) William Joseph Doherty, 54th Battalion, of Sutherland, NSW. Pte Doherty enlisted on 28 February 1916 and was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 26 September 1917 aged 41 years. He had come to Australia at the age of 34 years and was working as a salesman at Anthony Hodern prior to his enlistment. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War.
