Description
Studio portrait of 1578A Private (Pte) William Henry Pegrum, 53rd Battalion. A presser from Paddington NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Pegrum embarked with the 1st Reinforcements, 18th Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Themistocles on 12 May 1915. Originally reported as missing in action, a later Court of Inquiry determined that he had been killed in action on 26 September 1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War.
