Description

Collection relating to the service of 233546 Leading Seaman George Edward Thornton, HMS Cornwallis, Royal Navy, 1914-1916. Collection consists of a diary kept by Thornton during his service with the Royal Navy aboard HMS Cornwallis, between 21 October 1914 and 23 June 1916. Thornton records his experience of the landing at Cape Helles, where HMS Cornwallis supported the South Wales Borderers in their landing at S Beach (Morto Bay), and also of the evacuation of Gallipoli, where HMS Cornwallis was the last Allied ship to leave Suvla Bay, following the evacuation.
