Collection relating to the service of Lieutenant Elmer Winfrid Drake Laing, MC, 12 Battalion, Egypt, Gallipoli, France, 1915-1916. Collection consists of typescript copies of 3 letters written by Lieutenant Laing to his family in Australia. One letter contains a detailed description of his experiences in June 1916, at Pozieres. Location of original letters unknown.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Lieutenant Elmer Winfrid Drake Laing, MC, 12 Battalion, AIF, who on 8 May 1918 was killed in action at Strazeele. Other biographical details concerning him are: farmer & orchardist of Maddington, Perth, Western Australia, born La Perouse, NSW, 19 February 1892; was a lieutenant in the Citizens Forces; joined the AIF on 14 September 1914 as a private, and was posted to the 12th Battalion, 23 September 1914, promoted temporary corporal; 1 December 1915, sergeant; 12 March 1916, 2 Lieutenant; 12 June 1916, Lieutenant; served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France and played important parts in the Landing and in the capture of Pozieres. Lieutenant Laing was educated at Forest School, England, and at Marburg, Germany and returned to Australia at the age of 18.
