Collection relating to service of Major William Davidson, 1 Battalion, Egypt, Gallipoli, 1915. Collection includes copies of letters written by Davidson home to his wife and family in Australia. Copies made in 1928 by Australian War Memorial. Location of originals unknown.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Died 19 August 1915 of wounds received at Lone Pine. Officer of Australian Permanent Forces, Oatley, NSW. Born Nairn, Scotland 24 April 1866; educated Nairn High School; served eight years Seaforth Highlanders in India, taking part in the Black Mountain expedition 1888; came to Australia in 1890, and joined the Australian Permanent Forces; appointed Lieutenant and Adjutant, 1 Battalion AIF, 28 August 1914; promoted Captain, 10 October 1914; landed ANZAC, 25 April 1915 (and was wounded); Major, 26 April 1915; 16 August 1915, mortally wounded.
