History / Summary
Lancelot Giles was appointed in 1899 as Student Interpreter in the British Consular Service and subsequently lived through the historic siege of Peking during the Boxer Rebellion. His diary, written in letter form to his father, gives a graphic day by day account detailing the defence of the foreign legations in Peking from June-August 1900. It also includes sketches detailing the layout of British and other legations or diplomatic residences within the Imperial City.
