Description

Handwritten notebook (missing cover), relating to the service of an unknown soldier in the war of South Africa (Boer War). The name "1824 Trooper J Braddock, E Squadron, 3rd Regiment, NSW Mounted Rifles" appears inside the book, but it is not known if he was the writer, or just one of the several other men referred to. Other names include: Trooper Ellwood, Trooper Jones, 2504 Trooper Alfred Patrick Gormeley and 1652 Trooper Harry Montgomery. The diary contains brief entries related to service activities; a poem and anecdote; lists of places and military camps; and individual names and some addresses. Piet Joubert, the Boer Commander is also mentioned albeit as 'Jubburt'.

History / Summary

3 NSW Mounted Rifles arrived in South Africa in April 1901. From May until the end of the war their actviities were focussed in the north-east of the Orange River Colony, serving in the column of Colonel M F Rimmington. They entrained for Cape Town in late April 1902 for embarkation to Australia.
