Description

The recording begins with the sound of a Scottish band playing in the background as the unidentified commentator commences a run through of the Order of Service. The recording of the broadcast stops at this point and recommences part of the way through his description of the setting of the Australian War Memorial. The commentator then discusses the official party which is comprised of the Duchess of Gloucester, representing the Governor General the Duke of Gloucester, and representatives of eighteen allied nations. The commentator tells the radio audience that the music is provided by the RAAF band from Bradfield Park and the Combined Services Choir together with a schools choir, Voluntary Aid Detachmants (VAD), boy scouts and girl guides. The honour guards are comprised of detachments from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the Royal Military College, Duntroon (RMC, Duntroon), the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF), Australian Imperial Force (AIF), the Australian Military Force (AMF), the United States Navy, the Netherlands Royal Airforce, The Royal Navy, the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS), the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) the Australian Army Medical Women's Service (AAMWS) and the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF). The service begins with the hymn "Oh God Our Help in Ages Past"; "The Prayer of Thanksgiving" is given by the Right Reverend E H Burgman, the Bishop of Goulburn; "The Lord's Prayer"; hymn "Praise My Soul the King of Heaven"; prayer for the King and British Commonwealth; prayer for the United Nations; hymn "Oh Valiant Hearts Who to Your Glory Came"; prayer for "Those Who Have Served"; prayer for "Those Who Gave Their Lives in Battle"; hymn "Thank We All Our God"; unidentified prayer delivered by the Right Reverend E H Burgman; bugler plays "Last Post"; Recessional Hymn "God of Our Fathers Known of Old"; a flyover of aircraft is heard followed by the playing of "God Save The King" then more aircraft fly over as the commentator closes the broadcast with, "You have been listening to the Victory Thanksgiving Service broadcast from the Australian War Memorial, Canberra".
