Description

Studio portrait of 2051 Private (Pte) John Francis Williams, 16th Battalion from Dardanup, Western Australia. A 22 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 4 January 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia on 26 April 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata. After serving with the 16th Battalion at Gallipoli, he deployed to France where he was killed in action near Pozieres on 12 August 1916. Pte Williams is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
