Studio portrait of 3959 Private (Pte) Frederick John Thompson, 6th Battalion from East Ballarat, Victoria. A 32 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 13 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 23 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic. While serving on the Western Front he was wounded in action on 18 August 1916 near Pozieres, France and died of wounds on 20 August 1916. Pte Thompson is buried in the Puchevillers British Cemetery, France.
