Studio portrait of 1999 Private (Pte) Ernest John Sweet, 21st Battalion from Brunswick, Victoria. A 21 year old ironmonger prior to enlisting on 22 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne on 26 August 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises. He joined the 21st Battalion at Gallipoli on 12 October 1915 and later also deployed with them to France in March 1916. He was wounded in action at Mametz Wood, France on 18 November 1916 and died of his wounds on 21 November 1916. Pte Sweet is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, France.
