Studio portrait of 834 Private (Pte) Charles Edward Stevens, 7th Battalion from Tragowel, Victoria. A 19 year old storekeeper prior to enlisting on 22 August 1914, he embarked for overseas with G Company from Melbourne on 19 October 1914 aboard HMAT Hororata. He was wounded in action at Gallipoli and evacuated to Malta and then to England for medical treatment. After returning to Egypt in February 1916, he returned with the 7th Battalion to England in August 1916. The Battalion deployed to France in December 1916. In April 1917 he was again evacuated to England for hospitalisation and died of tuberculosis on 26 June 1917 at No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital Harefield Park, Middlesex. Pte Stevens is buried in the St Mary Parish Churchyard, Harefield, England.
