Informal outdoor portrait of 1703 Private (Pte) George Edward Michael, 49th Battalion from Brisbane, Queensland. A 33 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 25 November 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Reinforcements from Sydney, NSW aboard SS Hawkes Bay on 20 April 1916. Following further training in Egypt and then in England, he joined the 49th Battalion in France in July 1916. Pte Michael was killed in action near Pozieres, France on 3 September 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
