Description
Studio portrait of 2686 Private (Pte) James Alexander Piddington McIlveen, 36th Battalion from Moonbi, NSW. A 21 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 21 August 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 5th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 9 November 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in April 1917. While serving at Steenji, Belgium, he was taken ill and admitted to hospital on 14 August and then transferred to the 3rd General Hospital in Le Treport, France where he died from a cerebellar haemorrhage on 30 August 1917. Pte McIlveen is buried in the Mont Huon British Military Cemetery, Le Treport, Haute-Normandie, France.
