Description

Pre-war studio portrait of 2931 Lance Corporal William de Faye Lovett, 52nd Battalion from Ballarat, Victoria. A 25 year old orchardist prior to enlisting on 22 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion from Melbourne on 27 September 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata. On arrival in Egypt, he transferred to the 52nd Battalion in March 1916 and proceeded to France. While serving with the Battalion at the Battle of the Somme, he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3-4 September 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
