Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Francis Aylwin Leslie, 15th Battalion from Brighton Beach, Victoria. A 26 year old auctioneer's clerk prior to enlisting on 17 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 567) with the 5th Battalion Machine Gun Section, from Melbourne on 21 October 1914 aboard HMAT Orvieto. While serving with the battalion at Gallipoli, he was promoted, noted for various acts of bravery and valuable service and eventually evacuated due to sickness. After his recovery, he proceeded to France where he transferred to the 15th Battalion and was commissioned and later promoted. Capt Leslie was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
