Studio portrait of 218 Sapper George Alexander Kemp, 1st Australian Division Signals Company from Collingwood, Victoria. A 21 year old builder prior to enlisting on 15 February 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne. He served at Gallipoli from late August to late September 1915 when he was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria with influenza. After rejoining his unit in Egypt in February, he proceeded to France in March 1916. Sapper Kemp was wounded in action and died from his wounds on the same day, 5 May 1917 near Bullecourt and is buried in the Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.
