Description

Studio portrait of 3829 Private (Pte) Herbert Thomas Johnson, 26th Battalion from Ross River, Townsville, Queensland. A 35 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 13 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements from Brisbane, Queensland on 31 January 1916 aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62). After further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France with the 52nd Battalion in June 1916. The next month he suffered a self inflicted wound to the foot and following medical treatment and disciplinary charges in France, he returned to the 52nd Battalion in September 1916. Pte Johnson died from wounds received from trench mortar fire on 22 January 1917 and was buried in the Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, Peronne, France.
