Description

Studio portrait of 2178 Private (Pte) George Edward Jonas, 60th Battalion from Richmond, Victoria. A 22 year old station hand prior to enlistment on 8 May 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 1 August 1916 aboard HMAT Orsova. After being wounded in action on 11 May 1917 near Noreuil, France, he was evacuated for medical treatment and then returned to his battalion three months later. He was wounded for a second time on 22 October 1917 near Ypres, Belgium and evacuated to the 7th Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, France where he died of wounds on 11 November 1917. Pte Jonas is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
