Description
Studio portrait of 4516 Private Francis Benjamin Hutton, 46th Battalion from Collingwood, Victoria. A 21 year old grocer prior to enlisting on 26 October 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 14th Reinforcements of the 5th Battalion from Melbourne on 28 January 1916 aboard HMAT Themistocles. On arrival in France, he transferred to the 46th Battalion on 31 March 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1 November 1916. He was killed in action on 16 November 1916 at Flers, France when hit by a piece of shrapnel from a shell which exploded nearby the support trench in which he was sitting. He is buried in the AIF Burial Ground, Grass Lane, Flers.
