Portrait of 3546 Private (Pte) Victor Stewart Hope, 6th Battalion from Ararat, Victoria. A 21 year old traveler prior to enlisting on 30 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 11th Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion from Adelaide, South Australia aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 11 October 1915. On arrival in Egypt, he was transferred to the 6th Battalion and went with them to France in March 1916. Pte Hope was killed in action at Pozieres on 19 August 1916 and was buried near where he fell. After the war, his body could not be located and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
