[He is shown wearing a uniform with Sergeant’s rank stripes on the sleeve but there is no record of his ever holding that rank.] A 25 year old policeman prior to enlisting on 12 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service as an Acting Corporal with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he reverted to the rank of Private on joining the 7th Battalion. He transferred to the 59th Battalion in February, was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 30 May and proceeded to France in June 1916. Cpl Green was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France on 19 July 1916 and is buried in the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France.
