Description

Portrait of 1721 Acting Corporal Harry Drysdale Graham, 23rd Battalion from Doncaster, Victoria. A 30 year old orchardist prior to enlisting on 19 May 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne, Victoria aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1915. While serving at Gallipoli, he was confirmed in the rank of Corporal (Cpl) on 15 November 1915. He proceeded to France in March 1916 and was killed in action taking part in a raid on the enemy trenches on the night of 29/30 June 1916 at Rue-du-Bois, Fleurbaix. Cpl Graham is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. Two of his brothers also served: 164 Private (Pte) Percy Eric Graham, 13th Battalion was killed in action at Gallipoli on 26 April 1915 [see image H06387] and 785 Pte Kenneth George Joseph Graham served in the 8th Battalion and returned to Australia.
