Studio portrait of 5097A Private (Pte) Thomas Gibbs, 32nd Battalion from North Adelaide, South Australia. A 35 year old painter prior to enlisting on 18 December 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 16th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9). Following further training in England, he proceeded to France where he transferred to the 32nd Battalion on 13 October 1916. Pte Gibbs was killed in action near Le Transloy on 1 December 1916 and is buried in Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France.
