Description

Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) John Halligan, 59th Battalion from Ballarat, Victoria. He was a 19 year old salesman when he enlisted as a Private (service number 1355) on 26 October 1914 and embarked for overseas as a Corporal with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 7th Battalion from Melbourne on 2 February 1915 aboard HMAT Clan McGilllivray. After being promoted to Sergeant on 7 February 1916, he was transferred to the 59th Battalion on 26 February 1916 and then appointed a 2nd Lt on 29 July 1916. He was wounded in action on 6 October 1916 and then promoted to Lieutenant (Lt) on 14 February 1917. On 15 May 1917 he was wounded in a bombing accident and died of those wounds on 31 May 1917. Lt Halligan is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
