Description

Studio portrait of 1725 Corporal (Cpl) Bert Carloss, 14th Battalion from Terang, Victoria (born in Winnipeg, Canada). A 24 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 29 December 1914, he embarked for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 20 March 1915. After serving at Gallipoli, he returned to Egypt where he served with the Mounted Military Police from January to June 1916. He then proceeded to France via England arriving on the Western Front in July 1916. Cpl Carloss died at Pozieres, France on 12 August 1916, however, there are conflicting reports as to how he died. He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
