Description
Outdoor group portrait including 2872 Private (Pte) John Barnes, 51st Battalion from Castlemaine, Victoria, probably standing in the centre. A 39 year old miner prior to enlisting on 23 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements of the 11th Battalion from Fremantle, Western Australia on 5 October 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata. Following further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 51st Battalion, joining them in the field in France where he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916. Pte Barnes is buried in the Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, France.
