Studio portrait of 2636 Private (Pte) Matthew Archibald, 16th Battalion from Perth, Western Australia. A 21 year old boot maker prior to enlisting on 26 June 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 8th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 2 September 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he joined the 16th Battalion at Gallipoli and remained there until the evacuation back to Egypt in December. In March 1916, he went with the battalion to France where he was killed in action on the Somme on 10 August 1916. Pte Archibald is buried in the Courcelette British Cemetery, France.
