Studio portrait of 1902 Private (Pte) Theo Malcolm Agassiz, 55th Battalion from Newtown, NSW. A 23 year old horse-driver prior to enlisting on 28 January 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Sydney on 10 April 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata (A20). After arriving in Egypt, he joined the 3rd Battalion Transport Section and was promoted to Driver. He went with them to France in March and then was promoted to Driver in September 1916. Driver Agassiz was killed in action on 22 October 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
