Description

Monash Gully, looking south west from Turkish trenches on left of Quinn's Post. The lowest ridge near the sea is Maclagan's Ridge, Plugge's Plateau on right. High ridge running towards the sea on left is back of Johnston's Jolly. Braund's Hill can be seen just below it. Deep trench running down gully was dry for drainage. Sap running half right from where drain commences was the main communication sap to beach; was dry about the end of May 1915. Trenches running across right centre lead to Walker's Ridge, and were used for supports and sniping. Old supply depot was at the junction of this sap and gully, on left of gully. Brigade Headquarters was just behind these trenches, which are about 200 yards from the Turkish front line. One of a series of photographs taken on the Gallipoli Peninsula under the direction of Captain C E W Bean of The Australian Historical Mission, during the months of February and March, 1919.
