Description

A snow cleared road leading to the Butte du Lion (Lion's Mound), a large artificial hill raised on the battlefield of Waterloo to commemorate the place where William II of the Netherlands (Prince of Orange) was knocked from his horse by a musket ball to the shoulder during the battle. It was constructed in 1820 by order of his father, King William I of The Netherlands, and completed in 1826. The photographer (later staff Sergeant) Kenneth McLeod was a member of No 3 Squadron AFC and a photographer in civilian life. He joined the Australian War Records Section as a photographer in December 1918 and returned to Australia in March 1920.
