Men of the 2/24th Australian Field Park Company (formerly the 2/4 Field Park Company), Royal Australian Engineers, gathered around the grave of NX66384 Sapper Denis Reginald Ryan, who died on 18 August 1941 from wounds sustained from a bomb outside the Tobruk distillery. The men spent their spare time working on the grave and constructing the cross and epitaph.
