Awarded to R29859 Ronald Arthur (Bill) Reed. He was born in South Australia and joined the Royal Australian Navy in March 1946 as a Recruit Radio Mechanic. Reed undertook basic radio training at Adelaide School of Mines while stationed at HMAS Torrens (Port Adelaide) and then moved to HMAS Watson (Sydney) for advanced radio training. He then joined HMAS Australia and was promoted to Petty Officer Radio/Electrician after his return to HMAS Watson. He later served in HMAS Kuttabul (Sydney) and then in HMAS Tarangau where he travelled through the New Britain, New Ireland and Solomon Island archipelagos servicing civilian Coast Watcher's equipment. He then served in HMAS Sydney. Reed finished his twelve years service with a promotion to Chief Petty Officer Radio/Electrician while stationed at Belconnen Naval Wireless Station (Canberra) and then continued with the Royal Australian Fleet Reserve Service at Belconnen for a further five years.
