Grave with original marker, of 2862 Sergeant (Sgt) Halbert Leslie Lake, 13th Battalion, from Old Junee, NSW. On one of the two wreaths on the grave is a card which reads "A salute from two comrades [illegible names]". Sgt Lake enlisted at the age of 19 on 12 July 1915 and embarked for overseas on 30 September 1915 aboard HMAT Argyllshire. He was wounded in the stomach and captured at Bullecourt, France, on 11 April 1917. After spending several months in POW camps in Germany he was repatriated via Holland to England. On arrival he was admitted to King George Military Hospital on 14 April 1918 and died of his wounds on 1 May 1918. Sgt Lake was buried with military honours at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Brookwood, Surrey, England. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 195.
