Description

Australian troops of the 1st Division enjoying a well earned spell in the vaults beneath the ramparts of Ypres, in Belgium, after supporting the flank of the Canadian Divisions in the fight for Passchendaele. Identified, left to right, sitting, are: 6089 Private (Pte) P. Scott (pipe in mouth); 4188 Corporal (Cpl) B. Gates; next five men unidentified; 6236 Pte A. G. L. Cross (facing camera, knife in left hand). Standing: 7325 Pte Robert Alexander Smith (died of wounds 21 June 1918) (right foreground, sitting); 5971 Pte W. L. Brown (third from right, gun in left hand); 2239 Cpl W. A. Lang DSM (fourth from right, gun in left hand wearing helmet).
