Description

Outdoor portrait of A647 Pilot 3 Geoffrey Ingram (Geoff) Stephens. A pilot with 77 Squadron RAAF, he is wearing blue serge battle-dress uniform. Of the various insignia on his sleeve, the laurel wreath emblem with two stars identifies him as a Pilot 3, a category abolished in 1950. During an armed reconnaissance mission, Pilot Officer Stephens was killed in action, probably by ground fire, when his Mustang aircraft crashed near Seoul on 6 January 1951. The previous day he had volunteered to extend for a second tour. He was posthumously awarded the US Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and the US Air Medal.
