This marked the commencement of their conversion from the Mustang P-51D to its replacement. Three other squadron pilots were absent on leave. Of the four RAF pilots, Flt Sgt Lamb was the first of five to have been killed (on return from a mission) as a result of service with the Squadron. Four RAAF pilots in this group (all Sergeants) were also killed in the conflict. They were Don Armit, Al Avery, Blue Colebrooke and Ron Mitchell. Lamb and Mitchell died when their aircraft collided.
